Passport renewal in Angola

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Serviço de Migração e Estrangeiros (Migration and Foreigners Service - SME).

Renewing an Angolan passport involves submitting an application to the Migration and Foreigners Service (SME). Applicants must provide current documentation and biometric data to receive a new e-passport.

Your timing

It is generally recommended to begin the renewal process several months before the current passport expires. Processing times can vary depending on the service office and current demand, and appointment availability may be limited.

Start 90 days ahead

Starting at least 90 days in advance allows sufficient time for appointment booking and document processing.

The process

  1. 1Check current requirements and required documentation on the SME portal or at a local office.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment if required by the local SME office or border post.
  3. 3Complete the official application form as provided by the SME.
  4. 4Pay the relevant fees at an authorized bank or designated payment point.
  5. 5Attend the appointment in person to provide biometric data (photograph and fingerprints).
  6. 6Collect the new passport once notified that it is ready for pickup.

What to bring

  • Current passport
  • Completed application form
  • Proof of identity (usually an Angolan Identity Card/Bilhete de Identidade)
  • Proof of payment of the passport fee
  • Recent passport-sized photographs (as specified by current guidelines)

Who handles it

Fees are subject to change and are set by government decree; check the latest price list on the official SME website or at the service office.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensuring the name and personal details on the new application exactly match the national identity registry.
  • Confirming that all proof of payment documents are original and stamped by the banking institution.
  • Verifying whether a specific regional office handles passport renewals, as services may vary between provinces.
