Vehicle inspection renewal in Albania

How to renew a vehicle inspection — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Drejtoria e Përgjithshme e Shërbimeve të Transportit Rrugor (General Directorate of Road Transport Services).

Vehicle inspection in Albania, known as 'Kontrolli Teknik i Mjeteve', is a mandatory periodic check to ensure roadworthiness and safety compliance. Renewal involves presenting the vehicle at an authorized testing center to verify technical standards and administrative registration requirements.

Your timing

It is standard practice to schedule an inspection at least two weeks before the current certificate expires. This accounts for potential appointment waiting times at regional testing centers and allows time to address any minor technical repairs if the vehicle fails the initial inspection.

Start 14 days ahead

Advance booking is recommended to secure a time slot, as centers operate on scheduled rotations.

The process

  1. 1Verify the expiration date of the current vehicle inspection certificate.
  2. 2Schedule an appointment at an authorized technical inspection center (SGS Albania or local equivalent).
  3. 3Ensure the vehicle is clean and free of heavy mechanical debris for inspection.
  4. 4Present the vehicle for the technical assessment by certified inspectors.
  5. 5Pay the inspection fee at the designated station desk.
  6. 6Collect the new inspection report and updated certificate upon passing.

What to bring

  • Vehicle registration certificate (Leja e Qarkullimit)
  • Personal identification document (ID card or passport) of the driver
  • Previous inspection report
  • Proof of payment for the inspection fee

Fees are set by the Albanian government and can be confirmed on the official DPSHTRR website or at the inspection center, as they vary based on vehicle category.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Failing to clear unpaid traffic fines before the inspection, which may block the process.
  • Modifications to the vehicle that are not recorded in the official registration document.
  • Non-functional safety equipment, such as indicators, seatbelts, or braking systems.
