Travel visa renewal in Zimbabwe

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Department of Immigration Control (Zimbabwe).

Extending a travel visa in Zimbabwe typically involves applying to the Department of Immigration for an extension of stay before the current visa or permitted stay expires. This process ensures legal continued presence in the country beyond the initial period granted.

Your timing

It is advisable to begin the extension application process well in advance of the current visa's expiry date. This allows time to gather all necessary documents, submit the application, and account for potential processing delays or requests for additional information, without risking an overstay.

Start 14 days ahead

Applicants should aim to submit their extension request at least two weeks before their current visa or permitted period of stay expires to allow for processing time.

The process

  1. 1Identify the nearest Department of Immigration office or port of entry that handles visa extensions.
  2. 2Obtain and complete the relevant application form for an extension of stay.
  3. 3Gather all required supporting documents as specified by the Department of Immigration.
  4. 4Pay the applicable processing fee at the immigration office.
  5. 5Submit the completed application form and all supporting documents to the immigration officer.
  6. 6Retain any receipt or acknowledgement of your application for reference.

What to bring

  • Original passport with at least six months validity remaining beyond the proposed extension period.
  • Valid visa or entry stamp showing current permitted stay.
  • Completed application form for extension of stay.
  • Proof of sufficient funds to support the stay (e.g., bank statements, letter from employer).
  • Proof of accommodation in Zimbabwe (e.g., hotel booking, utility bill if staying with a host).
  • Return or onward travel ticket (if applicable).
  • Two passport-sized photographs.
  • Any additional documents specific to the reason for extension (e.g., medical report for medical extension, letter from institution for study extension).

Fees for visa extensions are determined by the Department of Immigration Control and can vary based on nationality, visa type, and the requested duration of extension. Applicants should confirm the exact fee with the Department of Immigration prior to application.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure all supporting documents are valid and complete; incomplete applications may be rejected or delayed.
  • Apply for the extension before your current visa or permitted stay expires to avoid being considered an overstayer.
  • Confirm the specific requirements and forms with the Department of Immigration, as these can change.
  • Be aware that an extension is not guaranteed and is subject to the discretion of the immigration authorities.
