Motor insurance renewal in Guyana

How to renew motor insurance — how it works anywhere

Written from published rules on 2 September 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Bank of Guyana (Central Bank of Guyana).

Renewing motor insurance in Guyana involves selecting a licensed insurance provider and updating the policy before the current coverage expires. The process typically requires providing vehicle documentation and confirming that all mandatory third-party liability coverage remains in effect.

Your timing

Most motorists initiate the renewal process at least 14 days before the policy expiry date to account for administrative processing times and the delivery of the insurance certificate, which is a mandatory document for driving.

Start 14 days ahead

Ensuring the hard copy of the new insurance certificate is received and displayed as required by local traffic regulations.

The process

  1. 1Contact the existing insurance provider or a new licensed insurer to request a renewal quote.
  2. 2Submit current vehicle registration details and information regarding the vehicle's condition.
  3. 3Pay the renewal premium through the insurer’s accepted payment methods.
  4. 4Collect the new Certificate of Insurance and the insurance disc.
  5. 5Affix the new insurance disc to the vehicle in the location required by traffic laws.

What to bring

  • Existing certificate of insurance
  • Vehicle registration document
  • Valid identification (National ID card or passport)
  • Proof of vehicle fitness (if applicable for the renewal period)

Insurance premiums in Guyana are determined by the individual insurer based on the type of coverage, vehicle value, and the driver's history; confirm the current rate directly with the chosen insurance company.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Ensure the insurance provider is currently licensed by the Bank of Guyana.
  • Confirm that the vehicle's 'fitness' certificate is valid, as insurance is often contingent upon the vehicle passing this safety inspection.
  • Always maintain the original hard copy of the insurance certificate in the vehicle as digital copies may not be accepted by traffic authorities.
