Motor insurance renewal in Barbados

Written from published rules on 27 August 2026. Not monitored for changes since. A starting point, not official advice — confirm anything that matters with Insurance Companies Association of Barbados (ICAB) / Financial Services Commission (FSC).

Renewing motor insurance in Barbados involves updating policy details with a licensed insurance provider before the current coverage expires. Most providers offer options for manual or automated renewals, often requiring proof of vehicle roadworthiness and valid registration.

Your timing

It is standard practice to begin the renewal process at least two to four weeks before the current policy expires. This allows sufficient time to resolve potential administrative delays, confirm payment, and ensure the new Certificate of Insurance reaches the policyholder, which is required for annual vehicle registration at the Barbados Licensing Authority.

Start 21 days ahead

A three-week window ensures that the physical or digital Certificate of Insurance can be processed and delivered, preventing a lapse in coverage that could affect vehicle road licensing.

The process

  1. 1Contact the current insurance provider to request a renewal quotation.
  2. 2Review the policy terms to confirm if any vehicle details or driver information have changed.
  3. 3Submit the required payment for the renewal premium via the provider's authorized portal, office, or broker.
  4. 4Obtain the new Certificate of Insurance and the cover note.
  5. 5Present the new Certificate of Insurance to the Barbados Licensing Authority when processing the annual vehicle road tax/license.

What to bring

  • Current insurance certificate
  • Vehicle registration document
  • Driver's license details
  • Proof of payment for the renewal premium

Costs are determined by the individual insurance company based on the vehicle's value, the driver's history, and the type of coverage (Comprehensive, Third Party Fire & Theft, or Third Party Only). Confirm exact premiums directly with the chosen provider.

What commonly goes wrong

  • Allowing insurance to lapse results in a gap that can cause significant issues when attempting to pay the annual road tax at the Licensing Authority.
  • Failure to update the provider regarding changes to the primary driver or vehicle modifications can invalidate coverage in the event of a claim.
  • Digital copies of insurance certificates must be printed to be accepted by the Barbados Licensing Authority.
